The money - something he had always lacked - came in useful, but the outcome was less than satisfactory: winning the prize should have meant that transport powered by high pressure steam earned public acclaim and commercial acceptance.

But nothing of the kind ensued and to Trevithick’s chagrin, his engine was relegated to static use, providing the power to haul trams along the Merthyr Tydfiil railroad in Wales.
