Space Voyage Ahem
During the Apollo 12 mission to the moon, Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean made a promise to himself, “If I get home, I’m going to live my life the way I want to.”
He of course did return home and stayed with NASA for another 12 years, flying in space again as commander of the second Skylab space station mission in 1973. It was on this flight that Bean rode a stationary bike for 90 minutes, the time needed for the space station to orbit Earth. He literally rode the bike around the world.
While continuing his career at NASA, Bean devoted much time to his hobby of painting. The more he painted, the more he discovered similarities between his profession and his passion. “They’re not at all incompatible. Flying skills are so much like painting skills, it’s amazing. All the good artists I know are observant and logical about everything. I never knew you had to be this way.”
