1492 Christopher Columbus Voyage

Christopher Columbus, born Cristoforo Columbo, was born in Genoa in 1451. Genoa, at that time was the wealthiest independent city-state in the Western Mediterranean. Columbus was born to a wealthy weaver and wool trader. He learned to speak several languages by the time he reached adulthood. As a young man, Columbus sailed to lands such as Portugal, Ghana, Iceland, and Ireland. Columbus married Dona Felipa Perestrello y Moniz. His son, Diego, was born sometime around 1480, but his wife died in 1485.

Columbus' Early Years

In 1453, the Turks captured Constantinople which caused trade prices on oriental products in Europe to rise. A trade route to China, India, and Japan which bypassed Muslim controlled Middle East would be greatly beneficial to European trade. Columbus took great pains to convince the Kings of Portugal and Spain to support his plan to sail around the world and reach China from the east. Neither were interested at first, but Columbus continued to attempt to convince the Spanish to support his plan. During his presentations in Spain, he met Beatriz Enriquez de Harana. Though they never married, she gave birth to Columbus’ second son in 1488. Columbus’ attempts to convince Spain to support his plan were not going well. Just as he was about to head to France, one of Columbus’ friends in the Spanish court convinced Queen Isabela to agree to support Columbus and his unpopular plan.
